Chris and I got ours set up this weekend and we have been using it to talk every night this week. Last night was Wilson's first experience using it and he loved it, especially seeing Chris! He was so hyped up that he didn't go to sleep until after 9:30. Tonight when I asked Wilson if we should call daddy he walked over to the computer and pointed.
We read books, played with trucks, had bedtime snack, and sang songs, all WITH CHRIS!!
Here Chris was playing with the special effects while singing- baa baa black sheep.

Look at those ears. Wilson pointed to his ears as soon as he saw Chris'. Too cute.

We have a Skype phone (we don't use Skype on the computer much) and we LOVE it. It has made living here easier b/c we don't have to buy calling cards and our family members in VT dial a local number (we "bought" a VT number). Some people like Vonage - but, we spend about the same as someone using Vonage. People tell me that Vonage has much better customer service. However, we haven't had to contact Skype's CS, so I don't know.
Anyway, so glad you were able to figure out such a great way of communicating! It reminds me that we should schedule webcam chats with the grandparents soon!
That is WAY TOO cool! I'll have to look into that for sure!
I love your background on your site!
I have wanted to get a webcam forever, but can't get up the nerve to do it. Does Skype work with any old webcam? What kind did you get?
I'm so glad that Wilson can see his Daddy every day now. That is just wonderful!
Katie, you might have a wc on your new laptop. It is fairly standard now. We did need one for C so the one we bought was one that had been returned. C negotiated with the Best Buy guy and he marked it down to $29. It was originally $5o. Best Buy is really good about that. Just as a salesman if there is any deals you can get or incentives and they will usually mark something down. Last year, when I got my laptop, they mark down my case.
Yes I believe it does work with any web cam.
We considered getting skype after we moved here. However, we had used it while Allen was deployed, and it drove me crazy. At times we would have very long delays on the phone where we couldn't even hold a conversation. Now, Brad has it and he doesn't have all of the delays. So, it probably would have worked out.
I don't get the webcam thing, though. We just used our webcam without paying, anyway. I'm not sure why we haven't pulled out our webcam since living here, though.
Angie, Skype accounts are free. At least, Skype to Skype is free. We only pay for Skype Out (calling out). So, you wouldn't have to pay to webcam another Skype user. Also, like Brad, we rarely have problems w/Skype (occasional dropped calls but no worse than a cell phone). In Iraq, Matt tried a couple different VOIP services and none of them worked well at all. I think it was the bad connections on their end. I think Skype has flat fees now like Vonage. So, we may just carry one using Skype when we move back to the States. $25/mo (and a yearly fee to keep our phone number) beats most Verizon landline accounts (unless it's a bundle package of internet/phone/cable)...we'll see...
Yay! We have also recently discovered the wonders of Skype! We talk to Kari, Andy and Reid every once in a while- it's good for us to see the kids and the kids to get to see each other, too... I wonder how well that would work on dial-up- just thinking of the grandparents in J-town, V-town, G-town...
But even better for Wilson to get to see his Daddy!
I can't find you. what is your skype name?
