The things they say...

On the way to school this morning:

Wilson: Mom, I know that not everyone came from someone's belly because where did the first person come from. Someone had to be here first?. I don't understand. Not everyone could have been born?

Me: Uh. Well. Uh....  That is a really hard question for me to answer. ... (thinking- oh shit! I don't know how to have this conversation with a FOUR YEAR OLD. I don't even feel comfortable having it with other adults.) Well. pause. There are different beliefs on how we were created. pause. Some people believe that we were created by God. They believe that God made man and then he made a woman and we all came from those two people.(while I am saying this I am thinking: should I talk about their names? no. Adam'srib? no. no. just basics. answer the question with an open mind and don't discourage questions. shit. shit. this is hard.)  Others believe that it was more like a universal accident and that we have evolved from monkeys. (thinking: did I seriously just say that? Saying God created us is much easier. ugh. How do you explain this stuff? I can't believe I am having this philosophical conversation with my four year old. I thought I had at least four more years.) I don't really think it was an accident, but I don't think that it was just as simple as God created us either. I think that God and science/evolution worked together. But I really don't know the answer.

Wilson:  Yeah. Daddy will know. Like maybe we were all chimpanzees...  But where did the first one come from?

Me: Yeah. You should talk with Daddy. He might have better answers. (thinking: I better give Chris the heads up... )

The Things They Say

Nora is talking enough that she is earning her first the things they say post. Yay!

Last night, while I was typing quietly at the computer, outside her bedroom, I sneezed. I thought that Nora was asleep so I was pleasantly surprised when I heard her sweet voice say, "Bless you mom." She proceeds to sing, "ni-ni bubby, ni-ni momma, etc." and say, "ready, set GO!"

That girl happily talked to herself for an hour. Needless to say, it was after 10 before she finally went to sleep but that was okay because she got some quality time with her Daddy when he got home. (They played with the puppet, Harry, and teased Buckeye. After watching and listening to them I have decided, that if left unattended... Chris would turn everything crazy!)

This morning, when I went into her room she said, "shhh. spida." and pointed to the wall. I couldn't find the spider, but she sure was excited about it being there.

the things they say

Last night...

Wilson and I were looking at a National Geographic Ocean Magazine (that my dad sent for him) and we were on a page with a lot of fish when Wilson asked me what kind of fish they were. So I told him, "this is a school of Maomao fish." He quickly and brilliantly responded with, "I didn't know FISH went to school TOO! What kind of things do they learn at school?"

At dinner Wilson and I were talking about upcoming events. I mentioned my dad visiting, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Nora's birthday, and Christmas. He added that his birthday is next and then he made sure that I knew "Halloween was first". I told him that he was right, Halloween is indeed first and that this year we get to dress up with Papaw. We also talked about him being able to dress up for school during "when I grow up day". He quickly added, "and I get to wear my astronaut costume to church too! I want to get a lollipop again-like last year. BUT I don't want to get sick." I can't believe that he remembers both events from last year, especially getting the flu... He was only TWO!

The things they say

Wilson, "Mom, I want to hear Carrie Underwood uh uh uh uh do it! Will you play that for me? And that guy song... bone, bone, bone?"

Me, "You got it? Want Katie Perry next?"

Wilson, "Ohhhh, YEAH!"

You can't say my three year old doesn't know his music.

the things they say

“I missed Nora when she was in your belly. I love her. I want to keep her.”

“It was really nice of Daddy to get you flowers Mom, he’s a good guy!”

“When you are sitting down and I am standing up, I am taller than you.”

After Wilson gave Nora her pacifier (without me asking him to) he looks up at me and smiles when she settles down and says, “I’m a great brother.”

And I will close this from a conversation we just had:
"What is that Wilson?" (pointing to a pile of doo-doo near the garage door)
"It's poop. I pooped!"
"Why didn't you come inside?"
"Because I HAD TO POOP!"
"I understand but...That is gross. Gross."

"Hey Dad, (touching to the top of Chris' head) Nora has no hair on her head, just like you do!" Wilson 4-16-10
Papaw and I haven't laughed that hard for a long time. Sorry Babe, he is right.
Priceless.

the things they say

Pretending to be Daddy.
"I am going to work. Can I have my lunch?" Wilson
I don't think that Chris has ever asked me for his lunch, but Wilson has definitely picked up on the fact that I make it for him.

the things they say

The day after Wilson's birthday was a Sunday.
We had people visiting for Wilson's birthday and had planned to go to Vancouver to see the sights during the Olympics.

Chris and I also had a commitment at church. So we decided that Chris would go to church and I would stay behind with the kids to get everything together for Vancouver.

Before leaving for church Chris filled a coffee cup with some coffee.

After Chris opened the door Wilson got upset.

At first we thought he was upset because Chris was leaving, but we soon realized that was not the case.

Wilson wanted to make sure that his daddy knew that it was okay that he had HIS cup.
"It's okay daddy... It's okay. It's okay you  take my cup with you." Wilson

cup contribution from gramma- thank you.

the things they say

Wilson: Mom… The mean bugs are in my room again. (The other night he had a bad dream about bugs and I had to shoo them out of his room and put an imaginary bubble over his bed.)

Me: They aren’t really mean, are they? You tell them to be nice or go away.

Wilson: They won’t leave. They are mean.

Me: I will open your door so they can get out. (I open the door and return to the rocking chair where I am nursing Nora.)

Wilson: They didn’t all go mom.

Me: Bugs, you get out of Wilson’s room. I see them leaving now. Stay out mean bugs… Look. The nice bugs are going in now.

Wilson: There are still mean bugs in here. Can you open the door to outside so that they can get out?

Me: Not right now, I am nursing Nora. I will have daddy leave the door open for a little while when he gets home. Okay? Mommy needs to be quiet now because I am trying to get your sister ready for bed. So I can’t talk to you anymore but I will check on you before I go to sleep. Deal?

Wilson: yeah

10 minutes of silence

Wilson: Bugs... I am trying to sleep!

I didn't hear another peep.

the things they say- 2

At the airport while we were waiting on our final flight to Bellingham the gate waiting area was rather crowded and the only seats available were handicapped seats. I took it as an opportunity to educate Wilson on manners and kindness.

I showed him the picture on the back of the seat and we discussed that some people need help physically and that those seats are saved for them. We sat on the floor for awhile until one regular seat opened up. As luck would have it the seat was across from a handicapped one. Soon a woman (who was not physically handicapped) came over and sat in the handicapped chair.

Wilson now sitting in his stroller announced to the woman:
  • "You are sitting in the handicapped seat. SEE the wheelchair. You can't sit there. That is not kind!"

the things they say- season premiere

I have decided to start a new series (of blog posts- of course). I will call it, the things they say. It will obiously include things that my children say that I want to remember forever.

I'll start with these:
  • When asked what his sister's name is he replies with, "Trampoline." He has no idea how accurate this name is... Considering that she thinks my bladder is a trampoline and likes to stomp on it at least 100 times a day.
  • This morning when I had to run to the bathroom, because Trampoline was going to town, Jake followed me. Wilson quickly came to the rescue stating, "JAKE. Mommy needs privacy." He then pulled Jake out of the bathroom and shut the door behind them. Two seconds later my "privacy" was interrupted by Wilson saying, "Only I can go in the bathroom with mommy."
  • When Wilson wants me to play with him he will ask, in the most precious voice, "Will you play wif me a lidle bit. Two minutes?"
  • Just a few nights ago, when Wilson was looking at his fork on the table he says, "Babe and Pop have forks at their house. We will check 'em out." (Random but awesome. He is definitely looking forward to our upcoming trip to Ohio.)
  • He tells one of his teachers as we leave daycare yesterday. "You know. Gramma has lots of horses, you know? I am going to see her in Ohio State. I'm going on an airplane. She replies with, "OHIO... really? Have fun Wilson." He proceeds, "Yeah... An AIRPLANE."
  • "I'm a working man, momma. I have to work on my seal." (Later I found out that he actually meant cereal. Didn't have a clue that he was talking about cereal until he started smashing it into the carpet.)
