On the way to school this morning:
Wilson: Mom, I know that not everyone came from someone's belly because where did the first person come from. Someone had to be here first?. I don't understand. Not everyone could have been born?
Me: Uh. Well. Uh.... That is a really hard question for me to answer. ... (thinking- oh shit! I don't know how to have this conversation with a FOUR YEAR OLD. I don't even feel comfortable having it with other adults.) Well. pause. There are different beliefs on how we were created. pause. Some people believe that we were created by God. They believe that God made man and then he made a woman and we all came from those two people.(while I am saying this I am thinking: should I talk about their names? no. Adam'srib? no. no. just basics. answer the question with an open mind and don't discourage questions. shit. shit. this is hard.) Others believe that it was more like a universal accident and that we have evolved from monkeys. (thinking: did I seriously just say that? Saying God created us is much easier. ugh. How do you explain this stuff? I can't believe I am having this philosophical conversation with my four year old. I thought I had at least four more years.) I don't really think it was an accident, but I don't think that it was just as simple as God created us either. I think that God and science/evolution worked together. But I really don't know the answer.
Wilson: Yeah. Daddy will know. Like maybe we were all chimpanzees... But where did the first one come from?
Me: Yeah. You should talk with Daddy. He might have better answers. (thinking: I better give Chris the heads up... )
