From 3 to 4...

Wilson,
I know that being prideful is not a trait that one should wish for but, in my opinion, every parent should be proud of their children and have goals to raise them to be good people that will make tomorrow a better place and bring joy to the lives of others. You are thoughtful, kind, and so very loving. Your imagination is extraordinary and your love for others is unmistakable. You make me proud! I love you so much and I know you love me, your sister, your dad, the dogs, our extended families, and your friends too. I am beyond lucky to be your mother and truly honored to watch you grow and help you develop. I thank God every single day for you and for your sister. I also thank the Lord for your father. He works so very hard for us (6 days a week and often 14 hour days) and his work allows me to spend every day with you. I promise you that there is nowhere else I would rather be.

When I reflect on the boy you have become it is hard for me to believe that you are only four years old because you have grown up so much this year. Both in size (you now wear size 5-6 in clothes and your shoes are size 13) and mind.

There are many traits about your personality that I love (and make you fantastic) and some of those same traits challenge my theories and ability. For instance, you are filled with love and emotion except your emotions sometimes gets the best of you… and me. But in the end, the best way to bring you peace is with a hug, a physical reminder that you are loved more than words can express.

We have had many opportunities to take you places this year. We have explored much of WA and you have become very comfortable in Seattle. We have made time to build new memories with our family in Ohio and Florida and you like to recall those memories often. Each person is so close to you in your heart that you would never know we live so far apart.

You have so many things that bring you joy (and in turn- bring me joy).
This past year you have added new interests to your preference bank but you still continue many of the same ones from last year as well. However, your knowledge level and the amount you wish to know about each one has definitely advanced.
I know that you will continue to grow into a fantastic five year old. We will have ups and downs but I promise you I will never stop believing in you and loving you. My love for you is immeasurable and unconditional. And I promise it always will be.

Love,
Your Momma, forever
p.s. you still call me Momma often and the thought of you growing up and me no longer hearing those two precious syllables makes me sad.

More about you…
Things you love:
  • eating turkey sandwiches. You could eat one every day and some days you even ask for one for breakfast. However, recently you have declared that you "no longer like cheese on turkey sandwiches. Just mayonnaise and mustard, please." Because you only "like cheese on crackers".
  • eating fruit, especially bananas. It is safe to say that you consume about three bananas a day, but when we run out you will eat any other fruit that we have on standby: apples, grapes, plums, oranges, and kiwi.
  • playing with other kids (you love having friends over to play and often break down into tears when it is time for them to leave-- even if they have played with you for a full 10 hour day)
  • bathing with your sister. You love the time when she and you are allowed to splash and be silly. You love showing her how you go under the water and pretend with your toys.
  • swimming. You fell in love with the sport of swimming. Your first real adventure was this past June when we traveled to FL and you have proven that you are a quick learner of the sport. By August (and a few weeks in a pool) you were in the water without floaties. You still feel safest in the shallow-end and have some more skills to gain, but you are really pretty awesome to watch. I hope that we can continue to encourage this skill next year when we move.
  • being outside. We walk everyday: rain or shine (lately it has been rain more than shine). You love taking the dogs out and exploring with them in the "jungle". On days when it is sunny you declare, "It is sunny out! A great day for a walk. Let's go, mom."
  • climbing rocks. You can't get enough of climbing rocks when we go to the fields. Every one you see you want to conquer.
  • playing with cars. When you have free time you are usually found with a car in your hand. And you are a professional car/truck sound maker.
  • creating with Legos. Your dad encourages you to build and you embrace the encouragement by creating space ships, cars, and garages in all shapes and sizes.
  • reading. You love reading and being read to. You like books of all kinds: colorful illustrations, magazines, and picture dictionaries. At night you are allowed to have your reading lamp on as long as you wish. (As long as you are reading and are quiet.) Some nights you read for great lengths- I will go into your room thinking that you have fallen asleep (as it is 9 or 10 pm) and that I need to turn your light off but instead I find you sitting up and consumed by a book. Looking diligently at each page before you turn to the next one. A stack of books is always nearby, either on the bed or your night stand. Then usually around midnight (when I go to the restroom or check on your sister) I will find your light on and you fast asleep with a book still in your hand. On other nights, you turn the light off when you know you are tired. You have grown up so much this year.
  • wearing your astronaut outfit. For the past four months you have worn your space suit. If it is clean, it is on.
  • music. This has been a constant with you. You love music. All types, except we don’t listen to children’s music often. After our recent trip to the Music Museum in Seattle you have started listening for instruments (piano, clarinet, and guitar) in songs that you hear and even asked me if you could watch an orchestra concert on TV the other day. We even let you watch American Idol with us.
You favorites:
  • your best buddy is Bennett and this past month you have played with him every Tuesday after school
  • your "best bud" at school is K.C.
  • your favorite color is green and you chose the color when ever it is an option (clothes, toys, plates, bowls, markers, you name it...)
  • "Buckeye is the best dog in the whole world." This is what you told me the other day after you heard me tell Jake that he was the best dog in the whole wide world. I laughed and asked you why Buckeye was the best. "Because he is the fastest." you quickly replied. He is definitely faster than ole' Jake dog. You are right about that.
  • your monster trucks (Air Force and Grave Digger)
  • Moving Bear. Your MB has been through it all with you and you are not ashamed to tell your friends how much you love him. After his accident this December, however; you have left him home more often because you "don't want anything else to happen to him."
  • your sister is one of your favorite people, I am sure of it... You don't like to hear her cry and even sing her songs when she does. (Old McDonald is a favorite.) You love making her laugh and carry her around the house. You especially love watching her succeed and learn new skills. You shower her with praises and good jobs that fill my heart with more love than is imaginable.
  • you told me yesterday (on your birthday) "that daddy and Papaw are the world's best ticklers...You, momma, are just not that good... at tickling."
  • comfy pants and polo shirts. You will often wear them together when you can.
Things you don't prefer:
  • avocado's. You try them often but every time you give them same "I still don't like them." response.
  • writing. It is hard for you to write and I don't push it but when we write notes and you trace my lines you often complain that is hurts your hand. My theory is that you like to do things well and you aren't satisfied with what you see because when I remind you that we get better with practice and give you examples of you improving skills in your life you typically grab the marker/pen and keep going.
