One really bad day!

5/16/06

I just dropped Jake off for his operation. I have been ready for this, or so I thought, for a week now. But this morning when I handed the leash to the Vet tech and Jake was lead off to the operating room I lost it. I mean really lost it!! I cried and cried. It was so embarrassing. I tried to stop. I kept repeating a list of reasons to NOT be emotional in my head. The list sounded something like this:
Be rational.
Come on, your dog is having surgery to get better.
You have two great doctors performing the operation.
He is in pain.
You picked the better surgery (TPLO).
After he heals he will be able to run and jump and play again!!
This is for Jake.
Jamie, stop it you are fine and Jake will be fine!
You DO NOT need a tissue.
Don’t cry… Don’t freaking cry!
Stop it.
Be rational.
Oh, he just tilted his head at me…. He is so cute. (Uncontrollable tears)
Jake will be fine.
They will call me as soon as they are done.
You are okay!

I told them that I wanted to pick Jake up tonight verses tomorrow grabbed a hand full of tissues and ran to my car. When I got in my car I notice how red my eyes were and began to cry because I looked like I had been crying. After some breathing exercises and a speed dial to my mom I began to calm down. Whew!! It will all be okay. How in the hell can I have real children when I am so emotional over my dog child?

Awwww.....I'm so sorry!! Its so hard because you can't explain to him what is going on. He WILL be alright. Don't worry. Are you there alone? That has to be even harder!

Poor Jakafer. But even more, poor Jame. I'm so sorry but like you said, he needs to have this done and will be much happier once he is healed. I am so glad you finally updated your blog. I keep checking it day after day and then, yippee, you did it. Thanks. I need to call you. I miss you already.

Miss you guys! Yeap Katie. I was alone for Jake's operation. (Chris left for a class on the Sunday before, but he got back home last night.)It was not fun. My new friend Counrtney helped me get him home. He (Jake) is doing much better now. He is suppossed to be towel walked for the first two weeks but he keeps trying to use it.

I'm sorry, Jamie. I felt the same way about Ranger's operation in August, but it was picking him up that I started freaking out, rather than dropping off.

I'm glad that you've updated your blog, too. I also have been checking.

What is towel walking?

You place a beach towel under the dogs stomach and in front their back legs. Then you hold both ends up. It keeps pressure off their legs (kinda like a crutches). On a smaller dog it would be much easier but 100# Jake...whew!
